Digitalkameras Comparing Zoom Functions
Digitalkameras have taken over the imaging industry. They have made it easy even for non-professional photographers to take high quality pictures. These cameras frequently have large or expandable memory permitting you to take several photos at any one occasion. They also eliminate the need for photographic film and the need for the developing process. You can skip right to the printing of the pictures or upload them onto your PC and edit them appropriately.
When choosing digitalkameras many people base their calls on the zoom functions of the cameras. This is a sensible factor to consider in the selection process. The zoom function of your camera will affect the standard of your pictures massively. It is therefore necessary to consider the zoom capacity of the camera you wish to purchase before making your last decision.
There are two main types of zoom functions available in digitalkameras today : digital zoom and optical zoom. While many manufacturers will tell you that the digital zoom on their cameras is a consequence of the total digital and optical zoom functions, it is mostly just digital zoom. The two zoom functions are distinct.
Optical zoom is often called the true zoom of the camera. It is attained by the particular movement of the lenses to draw the image closer. This means that the image formed still keeps the same quality as it had before. This is because of the fact that the camera’s full resolution can still be used on the image that has been zoomed. The levels of the optical zoom are modified by fixing the distance between the camera lenses. These are the same guidelines that the zoom functions of regular cameras are based mostly on. Many high quality digitalkameras used by reporters and professional photographers have optical zoom functions.
The 2nd kind of zoom you’ll find on many digitalkameras is the digital zoom function. Unlike the optical zoom function, the digital zoom function does not adjust the distances between the lenses. Instead it enlarges a chunk of the image you are viewing. This is the same principle that is applied in your computer’s camera. The quality of the image is thus influenced. This is because the full resolution of the camera can’t be applied to the zoomed image. Images produced thus are therefore not as high in quality as those produced by cameras with optical zoom functions.
Sony Company came up with a solution for the problem experienced in digital zoom. They developed the smart zoom function. This allows you to take stills at a reduced size. Zooming in will build up the picture without endangering its quality. This is a rather more cheap alternative option to the digitalkameras with optical zoom functions as the standard of the picture is still maintained.
