RECAPPINGTHE BOISE STATE 2009 SEASON

Although this was Boise States second best season that they had managed to participate in for four years, they were still not considered worthy of competing in the National Championships. 2009 season came with better rewards than 2008. You see, in 2008, Broncos went undefeated when they played in the regular season, but they did not even get a single chance to play in BCS bowl. However, Boise State got that chance to play in BCS in 2009 after they improved their upsets and toughened their schedule in major conferences. They did not waste their opportunity; rather, they won the Fiesta Bowl for the second time in four years.
Broncos game with Oregon in the season opener was probably Boises best. Oregon had been expected to fight for 2009 Pac 10 Title, so it shocked many people when Broncos won that game, even though they had proven themselves a challenge to the Ducks in the previous year in Eugene. The Ducks loss did not dampen their spirits though Boise State fought to defend their dominance with an awesome 19 – 8 win. Byron Houts post game punch for LeGarette Brout gave Boise State a clear path throughout the season.
Boise State then rolled easily in its next game, dominating Miami (OH) 48-0 on the smurf turf in Boise. Kellen Moore threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns in the win. The high scoring offense was still effective the following week in a 51-34 win over Fresno State. The Broncos were not seriously challenged in their next two games, either. A road trip to Bowling Green produced and easy 49-14 win against the nation’s best receiver, Freddie Barnes. Boise State also beat UC-Davis 34-16 before visiting a difficult Tulsa team.
Tulsa team was difficult, giving them only 18-14 by half time. However, Tulsa pulled away with ten points, getting an early 28-21 lead during the fourth quarter. However, the greatest defense from Boise State stopped them from holding on to the win. That was the closest any team came to taking a win against the Broncos throughout the season. In addition, it is not until Boise State played Texas Christian in the Fiesta bowl that they held below 40 points. The Broncos now got it easy with Hawaii, San Hose, Louisiana State, Idaho, Utah State, Nevada and New Mexico State to get 13-0 by the close of the regular season. For the first time, non BCS schools got bids and Boise State made it to the BCS Bowl. That was a historical event.
The Broncos, however, could not keep up with their splendid performance against the big boys again. The match up against TCU in Fiesta Bowl ended in a 17-16 loss after re-matching the Poinsettia Bowl game from 2008 season. However, Boise State could not resist revenge. Brandyn Thompson made an interception at 51 yards to answer a touchdown. They were successful at completing a fake punt to secure two yard touchdown through Dough Martin. They won 17-10 against the Horned Frogs.
