What Checks has God Established for Christian Fiction Writing?

Fiction is everywhere. It presents itself through movies, TV shows, literature, or political promises. The computer too is a platform for fiction. Computer games allow people to become heroes vicariously; online forums encourage young and old alike to become someone else, an imaginary identity, and to live out that person’s life, at least in make believe.

Being Christian writers of character book, it is vital for us to understand that the world is saying through its fiction that there are no limits. “The only limits on your life are mental limits,” we are told. But this is simply not true for several reasons.

First, fiction in literature may not seem to have limits but if it doesn’t sell, then it won’t be published. Thus what people want determines limits based on what the public will buy. The bottom line is the dollar.

Second, if a person comes up with a new way writing, a new idea for expressing an idea, it still must communicate in a way others understand. Otherwise, the writer’s creativity is meaningless. We must write so that we convey clearly what we want others to learn. This requires the limitations of proper grammar, spelling, and syntax.

Consider this definition of creativity. It is a fresh way to rearrange what is already here according to God’s principles. Why is this important? Only God can and did create out of nothing. We can only work with what He has already made. To obtain His permission to be creative in a way acceptable with Him, we must submit to the limits He has placed on creativity. God expresses these limits both through His laws and through His example. The human body is an example. Though most all bodies are basically the same, within that uniformity is vast diversity. No two people are or ever have been exactly alike. Fingerprints, for example, come in ten billion variations. We all have fingerprints yet each of our patterns is distinct. Again, we see infinite variety within the limits of His design. God is saying through His creation, “Yes, convey your message in a fresh way, but be sure that message conforms to what I have already established as true.”

As Christian writers, we must decide, am I going to write what people want to hear or what people need to hear? The Lord Jesus did the latter but look what it cost Him! Everyone who did evil hated the Light, as He predicted. Television in its early days presented life as we’d like it to be, idealistic, but enjoyable. Programs like Father Knows Best, Ozzie and Harriet, My Three Sons taught us to honor our parents and be kind to others. Today the shows present heroes who act and talk as does the public. This results in presenting young watchers or readers with sinful situations they would never see otherwise.

How should we treat fiction that is not realistic, like stories of talking animals? We again turn to Scripture and see that Jesus set the example for the place of fiction in conveying truth. He did not use fables; His parables depicted real life situations with which the hearers could identify. We might conclude from this that, though fantasy may have a small place in Christian writing, all writing needs to convey truth presented in Scripture.

Christian writers are also limited as to how their stories conclude. No, life situations don’t always turn out with everyone healthy, wealthy, and wiser. But the principle of sowing and reaping is taught in Scripture and we must be sure that what is sown in our stories, whether good or evil, ultimately gets a proper reward.

Creativity has its limits. These limits are established by God. As Christian writers we could give in to the pressure of the paycheck and just write what people want. Or we could follow the example and principles of Scripture or Bible songs and write fiction that declares truth found in Scripture. The second choice may cost us, but it will clearly honor the Lord in a greater way.
