Quarter Single Coins
Check Your Change for Some Great Collectible Coins
The introduction of the internet has completely turned around the way people find things to collect. Finding coins can of course also be done in the old fashioned way – newcomers to the hobby are often stunned at how many rare and valuable coins are actually still in active circulation.
One good starting point for new collectors is to look for “wheat pennies”. A successor to the Indian Head Cent, these U.S. pennies were made between 1909 and 1958. The wheat penny is named for it’s design, which includes a pair of wheat stalk bundles on the back side of the coin, and a picture of Lincoln on the front side.
A particularly interesting U.S. coin is the zinc/steel penny produced during the Second World War. Because of a copper shortage during the war, the U.S. Mint produced pennies made from steel, then coated with zinc to prevent any rusting. These coins, minted in 1943, are worth quite a bit of money due to their age and scarcity. They have a bluish gray tine, and a distinctive sound they make when they are hit, making it easier for you to tell them apart.
Quite a few of the Lincoln wheat cents feature the designer’s initials, VDB for Victor David Brenner, on the back of the coin. Most coins found were minted at the Philadelphia Mint which was the largest at the time, however, the coins that you come across that were minted at a location other than Philadelphia are more rare and therefore more valuable. These pennies can be worth as much as $700 in today’s market, that’s not bad for a single penny! Many are worth $15, which is still a very nice profit for a penny.
You can find coins in many places. With the growing popularity of coin counting machines, these coins are often passed from bank to bank unnoticed. This is why you should always take a careful look at your change; most people aren’t interested in coin collecting, but you have a lot of opportunities as a collector to run across a find!
It only takes a second to casually examine a coin. If you’ve done your homework in advance, you’ll be on the lookout for pre-1964 dimes, VDB pennies and the new state quarters. It is possible that you might even find Eisenhower silver dollars.
Quarters depicting each state began being produced in 1999, with five quarters being released every year. The project is due to end sometime in 2009, until then a new quarter comes out around every 10 weeks. Each state quarter features a different design on the reverse.
Since the state quarters are only produced in a limited time frame, this will increase their value over the coming years. The value of many of these quarters is already $2, which should increase since a coins circulation lasts about 30 years on average. If you start a coin collection now you will find they are very valuable in time.
Coin collecting is a hobby which involves long term planning. The value of your collection will increase in time, it’s possible that even a common coin will become a collector’s item in time.
