USPS wants to limit next-day guarantee (KSAT)
The U.S. Postal Service on Monday will announce a cost-savings proposal that
would no longer guarantee next-day delivery of first-class mail. The
financially troubled agency will present to its overseers a proposal to change
its national standard for first-class mail to two-to-five days from one-to-
three, according to interviews with several mail industry officials who
received a presentation by the agency this week. “This isn’t a change we’re
happy about,” said Art Sackler, executive director of the National Postal
Policy Council, a trade group for large mailers. “But if they don’t cut
somewhere and substantially, they’re going to run out of cash next summer.
It’s one of the lesser evils.” Right now, customers on average receive mail
the day after it was mailed, according the postal service. That may still
happen, but a lot less frequently under the proposed rules, say the insiders
who were briefed on the proposal. The proposed rules are not a surprise. The
postal service asked for public comment in September on “eliminating the
expectation of overnight service” for first class mail. But it could have a
major impact on customers, especially those who still use the mail to pay
their bills. …

Killing the President $45 The assassinations and attempted assassinations of American presidents were pivotal events that reverberated throughout the nation, even in cases where the murder was botched. The individuals behind each plot are often fascinating studies in obsession and distorted perception of realitylike President James Garfield’s assassin, who spent an extra dollar on the gun he chose for the act simply because it would look better in a museum display after the event. For the first time under one cover, this text offers a concise study of every presidential assassination, attempt, and rumor. Each chapter focuses on a single American assassination, providing an analysis of the president, the assassin, and the events that shaped their arrival at that place in time. The chapter then describes the assassination or attempt itself and the long-term impacts of the crime. Accounts of the more contemporary incidents involving Presidents John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush especially demonstrate the evolution of the monumental task of protecting the U.S. president in a free and open society. |

A Day Late and a Dollar Short $25.95 Could this be the final victory for civil rights, or the first of many to come? When Henry Louis Gates spoke out about his ridiculous arrest, he stated a truth few Americans?including President Obama?are eager to discuss: there is no such thing as a post-racial America. When it comes to race, the United States has come a long way, but not far enough and not fast enough. Every day, we cope with casual racism, myriad indignities, institutional obstacles, post-racial nonsense, and peers bent on self-destruction. The powers that be, meanwhile, always seem to arrive with their apologies and redress a day late and a dollar short. This book takes a close look at the lives of African-Americans from diverse backgrounds as Obama?s victory comes to play a personal role in each of their lives. Every tale delves into the complex issues we will have to deal with going forward: The many challenges young black men face, such as subtle persistent racism The stagnation of blacks vis ? vis whites Widespread black participation in the military despite widespread anti-war sentiments The decline of unions even as organized labor becomes the primary vehicle for black progress The challenges of interracial families The lack of good schools or healthcare for the poor The inability of well-off blacks to lift up others Barack Obama will deliver his first official State of the Union address in January 2010, and A Day Late and a Dollar Short will deliver an altogether different picture of the way things really under the first black president. |

The Trillion-Dollar Conspiracy $9.99 America’s economy is in shambles. . . . Its citizens are terrified and dissatisfied. . . . Could it all have been planned by a secret elite one hundred years ago? The New World Order. Hitler referred to it in his diaries. President George H. W. Bush foretold of it in his speeches. Formed by a secretive global elite, the group seeking this new order has taken hold of the nation—and perhaps the world. Its influence pervades every reach of American society, from the products we buy at the grocery store to the topics of evening news programs. But could it also be true that the New World Order caused one of the greatest financial catastrophes of our time? For years, bestselling author and legendary conspiracy researcher Jim Marrs has exposed information that the mainstream corporate media has refused to report. Now, with a crisis upon us, Marrs has yet again unearthed the lies to expose the insidious alliances that make up a secret world. Consider this: In 1910, a handful of the world’s most powerful government and corporate men gathered on Jekyll Island to discuss matters at a private hunting lodge. The agenda? First, the overthrow of the sitting American president; second, the creation of a central bank, one headed by a succession of elitists who would unconstitutionally control America’s money and its economy for decades. . . . Flash forward one hundred years. Never before have the American people been so unhappy. Apathy and paralysis are the nation’s guiding principles. Public education has repeatedly failed. More and more Americans rely on overpriced pills for remedies to fabricated illnesses. The average American household spends eight hours a day in front of the television, ruled by the vague fears of terrorist attacks and economic collapse. Control of the mass media has devolved to a mere five multinational corporations. Throughout The Trillion-Dollar Conspiracy , Marrs investigates the erosion of America’s civil liberties and the nation’s transformation into a police state: Will the government use a microchip to monitor the populace? How does the Patriot Act relate to Nazi legislation? Have Americans today become merely a poor imitation of the robust citizenry of our nation’s past? Jim Marrs responds with a resounding call of ” Yes, we have! ” He also raises powerful questions about so many other things: Was the financial bailout of 2008 nothing but one group of global elites passing money to another? Could the swine flu epidemic have been corporately manufactured? Is Big Pharm behind a lie that claims bipolar disorder is a real illness? Has a Nazi bioweapon caused recent maladies such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome? Why did the government suppress a device that can apparently cure cancer? In the explosive The Trillion-Dollar Conspiracy , Marrs explores the back rooms and shadowy deals of our nation’s past to craft a frightening history that no one e |

Renegade: The Making Of A President $9.29 Before the White House and Air Force One before the TV ads and the enormous rallies there was the real Barack Obama: a man wrestling with the momentous decision to run for the presidency feeling torn about leaving behind a young family and figuring out how to win the biggest prize in politics. This book is the previously untold and epic story of how a political newcomer with no money and an alien name grew into the world’s most powerful leader. But it is also a uniquely intimate portrait of the person behind the iconic posters and the Secret Service code name Renegade. Drawing on a dozen unplugged interviews with the candidate and president as well as twenty-one months covering his campaign as it traveled from coast to coast Richard Wolffe answers the simple yet enduring question about Barack Obama: Who is he? Based on Wolffe’s unprecedented access to Obama Renegade reveals the making of a president both on the campaign trail and before he ran for high office. It explains how the politician who emerged in an extraordinary election learned the personal and political skills to succeed during his youth and early career. With cool self-discipline calculated risk taking and simple storytelling Obama developed the strategies he would need to survive the onslaught of the Clintons and John McCain and build a multimillion-dollar machine to win a historic contest. In Renegade Richard Wolffe shares with us his front-row seat at Obama’s announcement to run for president on a frigid day in Springfield and his victory speech on a warm night in Chicago. We fly on the candidate’s plane and ride in his bus on an odyssey across a country in crisis; stand next to him at a bar on the night he secures the nomination; and are backstage as he delivers his convention speech to a stadium crowd and a transfixed national audience. From a teacher’s office in Iowa to the Oval Office in Washington we see and hear Barack Obama with an immediacy and honesty never witnessed before. Renegade provides not only an account of Obama’s triumphs but also examines his many personal and political trials. We see Obama wrestling with race and politics as well as his former pastor Reverend Jeremiah Wright. We see him struggling with life as a presidential candidate a campaign that falters for most of its first year and his reaction to a surprise defeat in the New Hampshire primary. And we see him relying on his personal experience as well as meticulous polling to pass the presidential test in foreign and economic affairs. Renegade is an essential guide to understanding President Barack Obama and his trusted inner circle of aides and friends. It is also a riveting and enlightening first draft of history and political psychology. From the Hardcover edition. |
