The Skill of Marquetry Designs on Jewelry Box and Other Things
Marquetry is an art and a part of history. It didn’t quite catch people’s fancy until the 17th century, although it made its first appearance in the 1500s, when modern tools made it easier for marquetarians. A marquetry designed jewelry box has been popular over the centuries because of its intricate designs.
Marquetry uses pieces of veneer to inlay designs. Several layers of veneer are put together and cut to form beautiful patterns. Extra care is taken so that no gaps show up in the design.
It is said that marquetry started in Egypt and then spread to England, Holland, France, and other places. Marquetry work was so expensive that only royal families could buy it. King Loiuis XIV had marquetry done all over his palace in France.
The wood mainly used by the craftsmen were satin wood, rosewood, mahogany, walnut, and cherry. A water based adhesive has to be used to do the actual design. There were straw techniques also used in the past.
To achieve the evocatively contrasted designs, wood veneers should be of different colors and grains. Burl wood of different trees is used commonly in marquetry because of the varied patterns and beautiful colors. Marquetry designs are generally geometrical and symmetrical shaped.
These designs were created on different types of furniture like display cases and tables, and also on snuff boxes and treasure chests. Marquetry work with floral designs were done on big grandfathers clocks and musical instruments in London. With the technology improving it is relatively simpler to form more intricate designs but they still require a lot of skill.
The art of marquetry is being taught in craft schools across the globe. Germany has contributed a lot toward the designing of the tools used in marquetry. These tools generally last a life time.
Chisels, wood files, and hammers, used in marquetry, are now available with brass handles. Even materials like sea shells, mother of pearl, tortoise shells, silver, ivory, and brass, are used instead of wood for the inlay work. Exquisite marquetry is also done on floors in several western countries.
Considerable amount of skill and labor is involved in this. Marquetry produces a rich look to ordinary tables and dressers that it is much sought after. The wood used for this can be dark or light as long as it can bear the weight of the marquetry work.
All items that have marquetry designs on them are very popular and are treated as collections. Several marquetry designed items are found in museums in Holland, France, and England. Furniture designed with marquetry can be still found in palaces around the world.

Pieces - $19.99 With a tagline that reads, “You don’t have to go to Texas for a chainsaw massacre,” this Spanish-Italian entry into slasher film territory went on to achieve a dubious distinction as one of the most tasteless films ever produced. The bloodshed opens in 1942 with a scene of a little boy axing his mother after her discovery of him piecing together a puzzle of a nude girl. Cut to 42 years later and the little ax-man has moved on to chainsaws as he begins buzzing coeds on the campus of a New England college. Police Lieutenant Bracken (Christopher George) and his partner arrive to investigate. They find a trail of dismembered bodies that happen to be missing some parts and a group of suspects including a shady dean of students (Edmund Purdom), an anatomy professor (Jack Taylor), and a monstrous caretaker (Paul Smith). Led by beautiful undercover cop Mary Riggs (Lynda Day-George) and student-stud Kendall (Ian Sera), the investigation leads everyone to the killer, who has just finished adding the final pieces to his human jigsaw puzzle. ~ Patrick Legare, Rovi |
