Hobo Nickel
How do I alter coins?
I have many copies of worthless coins (less than $5) and I want to alter them (EX: Change the dates, alter the face). I can’t find any information on how to do that. I am not forging coins, I am altering dates/engraving. More or less like making hobo nickels. Any help?

I am not defacing US currency, I have some obsolete coins that aren’t worth much.
It actually is illegal to deface U.S. coins but the secret service has better things to do. They will go after some one that alters a coin for illicit purpose. Hobo nickels were hand engraved and altered by the use of a knife that is why the original ones command $200 and up. There are many engraving tool systems around but the main thing is talent. No all can do such things and there is no easy road.
