Coin that was never made?
Back in 1968, my dad bought a roll of 50 dimes from the bank. When he opened the roll, he looked through them for any mint defects. They were all brand new 1968 D’s… except for one.
In the roll was a 1968 S dime. Back then, he was told that only proofs were ever made.
What is strange is that every other coin was a D and there was the one S in the roll.
I know that the San Francisco mint had recently re-opened that year after closing in 1955.
Does anyone have any information about this coin?
I know wikipedia says supplemental coinage was made 1968-1974, but i have also found at leas a dozen other sites saying that only proofs were made.
Weren’t they supposed to use a special polish on the proof dimes?
This just looks like a normal, uncirculated dime…
In 1968 only proof dimes were struck at the San Francisco mint. It is not uncommon for proof coins to be taken from proof sets and spent or used to fill a roll back up. Some one wanted a 1968-D mint state dime and to fill the roll back up put in a 1968-S proof. The proof coin is considered mishandled. It was probably a collector with one of the new albums that had holes for the S mint proof dimes as well as the circulation strike dimes. Your dad happen to get that roll. The mint did not actually close in 1955 but was down graded in status and held deposits of gold and silver. So your dads dime should have mirror fields and look different than the rest of the roll besides the mint mark. If not it needs to be seen to determine just what it is. Over 3 million proof dimes were struck that year.
