Flying Eagle Penny
U.S.- Can we still use old money to buy something?
I was just wondering. For instance, if I went to buy something for $1.41 and i paid with a regular dollar from the 2000′s, a standing liberty quarter, a buffalo nickel, a liberty seated dime, and a flying eagle penny, would it be accepted?
Generally yes, but the clerk will only honor face value and as soon as you leave the store, they will substitute current coins for the old ones. The old ones are worth more than face value, but no store is going to give you the market value.
If you use self-serve checkout, the machine won’t be able to handle the money. The paper bill wouldn’t be a problem as it’s within the last 20 years.
