Dollar Rainbow
All my fish are dying!

So, we have a big 75 gallon tank and had a lot of fish in this tank. Well about a month ago we were going to do our monthly clean for the tank. So we cleaned it and probably about 3 days later, it started to turn green all over. So we cleaned it again, and about 3 days later it turned green again. So then we waited about a week then cleaned it again, but once again.. it turned green. So we put all the fish in a separate tank and drained the whole tank out completely, changed the gravel, and put in a new decorative rock. We made sure all of it was washed, then we filled the tank back up. Well over the past hour or so, they have all been dying one by one. We have really old Silver Dollars (about 9 years) some $15 dollar rainbows, tiger barbs, black skirts, 2 cichlids, and one plecastomous. Please, what’s happening??
Too much cleaning….
You have probably destroyed the tanks cycle, stressed the fish, temperature shock, then possibly chlorine from the fresh water. Add all that together and you have dead fish.
The bad news? Nothing you did will have ANY effect on the tank going green. That’s usually an issue with too much light, or excess nutrients in the water. Worst thing of all, the green algae doesn’t harm fish, it’s only a cosmetic issue.
Only real way to fix algae is to change the light the tank is getting, move it, shade it, turn off the tank lights more etc.
Not sure what to tell you to do now…
Did you use water conditioner? If not, throw some in there now and it may save the rest.
Otherwise, leave the tank alone and see if they survive. You may need to do extra part water changes over the next few weeks as the tank re-cycles.
Future maintenance – WEEKLY part water changes, algae wipe downs and gravel vacuums. Monthly just wont cut it, and doing a large and infrequent water change will stress the fish much more than regular part changes.
