Popular And Intriguing U.S. Commemorative Coins
The U.S. Commemorative coins were created to celebrate and honor certain people throughout American history. However, they are also to honor places, events, and institutions as well.Deciding on who to put on these coins depends on their influence throughout society. It’s a collection of sorts and when they are released it comes with a limited-time structure
If you want to start collecting U.S. commemorative coins or have been for years, it’s possible some of them are hard to find. This would depend on the supply that was released and the type of demand by collectors. Here is a list of the most popular United States commemorative coins by year:
There was a buzz amongst collectors in 2011 when the Medal of Honor Commemorative Coin Program was released. You can choose between the gold or silver coin option. Both of them provide a unique approach to this piece.Your gold coin will show the original Medal of Honor piece given in the 1860s.The silver coin provides Army, Navy, and Air Force medals of Honor on the obverse side.
There is a $5 coin and a $1 coin respectively. The reverse side of these coins present different variations as well.Minerva is presented holding a shield and Union flag. It’s a way to bring the past and present together as one.The silver coin presents an infantry soldier carrying a wounded soldier over his shoulders while running from enemy fire. You can’t truly appreciate these unless you see them first hand.
Another popular choice was the 2009 Abraham Lincoln commemorative coin.A lot of this had to do with the 500,000 coins available, even though 125,000 of them were uncirculated. The image of Lincoln is shown from the excerpt of the Gettysburg Address. There were several other coins throughout the first decade of the 21st century, but they weren’t the only ones still popular today.
The Oregon Trail Memorial Half Dollar is a favorite that was minted in 1926.They have plenty of value attached to them, even if they’re worn. This is if you’re considering the original investment of one dollar. The Oregon Trail was an important part of American history and will always be apart of the educational process for youngsters around the country.
One of the most interesting U.S. commemorative coins was the Hawaiian Sesquicentennial Half Dollar. In total there were 10,008 of these distributed, but in the beginning they weren’t expected to have much value.Juliet May Fraser was the person behind the creative design of this coin. Back in 1928 these coins were minted for collectors to purchase.
There is tons of significance behind the Lafayette Dollar from 1899.While it was dated as being made in 1900, it was the first coin to have the president on it (G.W.).The name of the coin (Lafayette Dollar) was also on the coin, which was a first as well. Then of course it had the president on both sides of the coin for the first time.
If you’re interested in more modern commemorative coins consider the America the Beautiful Quarters such as the Hot Spring National Park quarter. You may also be interested in the US Territory Quarters such as the Northern Mariana Islands quarter.
