Cent Dime
Why is a nickel’s size bigger than a dime, when a dime is 10 cents, compared to the nickel’s 5 cent value?
A 5 cent nickel is bigger in size than a 1 cent penny, but why is it also bigger than a 10 cent dime?
Because coins used to be valued at the exact value of the gold or silver in them. Only the smallest denominations like the half cent, cent and two cents were not silver. Inflation eroded the buying power of coins and the silver became worth more than five cents (which was called the half dime), so a replacement needed to be found, and a composition of 75% copper and 25% nickel was settled on (and is still used today). They soon became known as nickels. By the 1960s, the value of silver had exceeded the face value of the other silver coins, and in 1965, silver was removed from the dimes and quarters and the silver content of the half dollar was reduced from 90% to 40%. By 1971, the half dollar went to all copper-nickel composition as well.
But the size of the coins did not change. The new composition does not weigh quite as much as the silver, but the diameter and thickness is the same. And that’s why a dime is smaller than a nickel.
