Barber Silver Dime
Prices of old U.S. coins?
Over the years, I’ve collected a few coins from the past. I currently need some money, and would like to sell some of them, but I’m really not sure on their value. Below is the list. If someone could give me the value on all or most of these coins, I would greatly appreciate it!
(3)Kennedy Half-Dollar(1964,1971,1972)
(7)Silver Quarter(Various dates between 1935, and 1964)
(4)V-Nickel(1901,1903,1906,1910)
(1)Nickel(1964-D)
(4)Barber Silver Dime(1899-P,1907-P,1910-P,1912-D)
(26)Indian Head Cent(All dates 1889-1909)
(3)Wartime Steel Cent(1943-P,1943-D,1943-S)
(5)Sacagawea Dollar(2000-D,2000-P,2000-P,2006-P,2006-D)
I am going to assume that everything is average circulated condition, as I can’t see what you’ve got.
Spend these coins: The Sacagawea dollars, the ’71 and ’72 Kennedy halves and the 1964 nickel.
Everything else is common dates/mints. The quarters are worth $5.25 each in silver, dealers in my area are paying 18 X face value, or $4.50. The 1964 Kennedy is worth $10.50, $9 from the dealer. The barber dimes are a little better, if in ‘average’ circulated condition, but most aren’t, they’re quite worn and worth just the silver to a dealer, $8 tops for all four. The V nickels from fifty cents to a dollar each, the Indian cents one to two dollars each, the PDS set of 1943, $1.
You’re looking at somewhere between $75 and $100 from a dealer. Selling to collectors will yield more money but it’s a lot of work and probably not worth the time.
Edit: You may think that $75 is not a lot of money for ‘old coins’. It actually is. First, you have to understand that old does not necessarily equal valuable. Rocks that are millions of years old are just…rocks. You can get old Roman and Greek coins for a few dollars each. The problem with these is that most of them are corroded from centuries of being buried, are hard to make out what they are, and so, collectors don’t want them.
The face value of the 8 spendable coins is $6.05. For those, you can get $6.05 worth of stuff. The coins you keep have a total face value of $2.94. You’d be getting at least $75, or 25 X face value, which is higher than the 18 X face the dealer pays for silver (which is very high right now). That’s mostly because of the Indian cents. Getting a dollar for a penny is pretty good in anyone’s book. Going all the way back to 1889, what that penny would buy at the time, because of inflation, would cost 25 cents today.
